Overseas Trip Splitting: How to Calculate Exchange Rates?

Splitting bills abroad is complex.
"Paid in local cash", "Paid in exchanged cash", "Paid via Credit Card (billed later)".
How do you settle this in your home currency?

1. Deciding a Base Rate

Rates fluctuate daily. Trying to be exact leads to madness.

Pick one rate (Day 1 rate or Average Exchange Rate) and apply it to everything. This is the most peaceful method.

If everyone agrees, treat small rate differences as acceptable margin of error.

2. Handling Credit Card Payments

Card billing amounts aren't fixed until the statement comes (fees added).

Don't be exact. Use "App Rate x 1.02 (approx 2% fee)" for a provisional calculation and settle it.

Asking for "10 yen back" weeks later is stressful for everyone. Estimate slightly high, and let the payer keep the surplus as a "service fee".

Manual calculation is impossible when A paid in USD, B in JPY, and C in Won.
